From the beginning of February, the pollen scattering forecast has started to broadcast on TV news every day along with the weather forecast in Japan.
And the Japan Weather Association publishes pollen forecasts in Japanese.
Many people suffer from hay fever, which makes them sneeze and runny nose, that is of concern to many of Japanese people.

This year, people are wearing a mask to prevent covid-19, but the mask has been originally essential during this season to prevent pollen.

What kinds of plants cause hay fever in Japan?

Cedar pollen
Cedar pollen is scattered from about February to April. It scatters a lot and is the most common cause of hay fever in Japan.
It scatters over a wide area.

Cypress pollen
The cypress pollen is scattered a little later than cedar, from about March to May. Like cedar, it has a long scattering distance.

Ragweed pollen
Ragweed pollen is scattered from about August to October.
In Japan, it is said that Ragweed pollen is the second most common causes after Cedar and Cypress.
Although not as major as in spring, there is also hay fever in autumn.

Now, it is the season when masks are essential.
