You can take on a train by using an IC card such as SUICA or PASMO. If you don’t have them, your option is to buy a ticket.
How to buy short-distance ticket
Following is an example to buy a ticket to Ikebukuro from Shinjuku.
It’s a short-distance ticket, so you can buy it at a ticket machine.
1. Finding a fare
A map and fare is usually displayed above the ticket machine.
Some stations have an English map and fare display, and some stations only have a Japanese one.
But don’t worry if you don’t find the English one.
2. Buy a ticket at a ticket machine
This time, I bought a ticket at this type of ticket machine that I often see.
(1) Let’s change the menu first to English.
(2) Press the ticket button
(3) If you don’t know the fare, press the “Search station name” button.
(4) Enter the station name of the destination
(5) When the destination station name is displayed, press that button.
The fare to Ikebukuro is shown 160 yen.
(6) Put coins into the right hand side slot, or banknote to the center slot.
Left hand side slot is for IC card.
(7) Now you’ve got the ticket.
