Shinjuku Tenkichiya’s Tendon
I wanted to eat Tendon.
The other day, I had a chance to go to Shinjuku, so I ate a Tendon at restaurant called Tenkichiya.
Tendon is a bowl of rice topped with tempura and a special sauce.
Tempura is a traditional Japanese cuisine.
It is seafood and vegetables covered in batter and fried in oil.
This is the menu displayed at the entrance.
If you look closely, it is written in red letters as “National Donburi Grand Prix Gold Award for 7 years consecutively (全国丼グランプリ7年連続金賞)”.
I can look forward to having a nice lunch.
Donburi is made by putting rice in a bowl and putting something on it.
In addition to Tendon, there are various “don” which means “donburi” in Japan, such as Katsu-don, Oyako-don, Gyu-don, Una-don and Tekka-don.
Menu
I considered what to order for a while.
I decided to order the tendon, because they say it got National Donburi Grand Prix Gold Award.
In this restaurant, Tendon is called as “Tenkichi-don”, which is named after restaurant’s name “Tenkichiya”.
The menu says:
Tenkichi-don (天吉丼) includes as follows.
Four shrinps (海老四本)
Cod fish (真だら)
Squid (イカ)
Soft-boiled egg (半熟卵)
Green beans (インゲン)
Eggplant(茄子)
Seaweed (海苔)
with Miso soup (みそ汁)
It costs 1,350 yen (tax included).
Prices are written in Kanji character.
If I have a chance, I would like to introduce how to read it.
Tendon : Tenkichi-don (天吉丼)

It looks tasty, isn’t it?
It is not so crispy if you compared to original tempura, because special sauce is put on it.
But this is Tendon.
Shrimp and cod fish was fresh and juicy.
Tempura with special sauce goes with rice.
The sauce is based on soy sauce and has a sweet flavor.
Egg is half-cooked.
It is not boiled, but it is fried in oil.
Inside is like this.
It is also nice.
I wonder how to fry it.
Tempura set : Ten-mabushi (天まぶし)
If you want to eat tempura, you should choose Ten-mabushi (天まぶし) which prices is 1,550 yen.
It is served as a so-called tempura set meal.
However, it contains a special style in this restaurant
According to the instruction, first eat with original tempura style.
After that, put the tempura on the rice and sprinkle special sauce on it and eat it with Tendon style.
At the end, after putting the Kakiage Tempura on the rice, pour the dashi stock and eat it.
I think this 3 way style is this restaurant’s original.
Next time, I would like to try it.
